A hair stylist’s journey from hairdresser to hairdressing superstar
A hair-and-makeup stylist has spent more than a decade as a professional hair styliser, making a career out of helping others achieve their dream of having a good hair day.
But that dream is increasingly in jeopardy as the industry is facing an increase in the number of hairless celebrities who choose to use salon-style styling rather than a more traditional, full-body hair service.
The salon-shopper’s journey started at age five, when her mother gave her a set of scissors, a brush and a small amount of plastic hair-spray for her to use to make her own hair. “
People don’t really want to look at the pros and cons of having that hair and getting it done properly.”

“It was a very basic haircut.
It was a basic haircut,” said the stylist.
When she started working as a hair stylister, she began to work with other girls who were not as tall as she was. “
There was nothing special about my hair, it was a natural hair product, and it was very simple to use.”

“At first, I used to do all my hair in a single session, and I was a little bit shy of doing a full session,” she said.
“By the time I was 25 years old, I was already doing a lot more sessions and doing it a lot better.””
By the age of 28, the stylists’ clients had started coming to the salon-styled salon in their neighbourhood. “

“Nowadays, I would work a full day with one client,” she explained.
“That was actually a lot harder because there were so many other girls there who were busy doing their own hair and going to work and shopping and so on.”
I worked a lot longer hours, I worked a bit more, and that’s when I realised that it was my time to take the reins.
“Her clientele was diverse and varied.
“If the hair was too coarse, I wouldn’t do it. “
The most important thing for me was that the clientele could have hair that they could enjoy and that they were happy with,” she added.
“If the hair was too coarse, I wouldn’t do it.
If it was too thin, I’d cut it out.
If the hair had too much volume, it would be too tight.
If there was too much curl, I didn’t do the hair.”
The hairstylists’ journey has taken them to many different parts of the world.
In China, she worked for two clients, but when she returned to the US she found that she had to be careful when choosing hair colours.
“When I was in the States, I actually worked in a salon, and we did the same style of hair,” she told Alja.
“After I left, I had to go to another salon, because there wasn’t a good way to find hair colours in the US.””
But after a year of working for one client, the salon had to close. “

But after a year of working for one client, the salon had to close.
“They started closing their shop, and then they closed the next one, and the next and the one after that.
And they were closing the salon where I had worked,” she continued.
“And I couldn’t do anything.”
Al Jazeera contacted the salon’s owners, but they were unable to confirm the story.
The salon had closed in 2017.
The stylist said she felt like she had given up her dream of a good day, and her clients were not happy with her choice.
“A lot of the clients are people who are already very successful, and they didn’t know what I was going to do,” she recalled.
“Some of them were really angry because they didn and I didn, and all I was able do was get a few of them a haircut.”
“My hair is not a problem, but my clients are,” she concluded.
“So my hair is now a problem.”
In this country, we have a lot to learn, and as long as you are a stylist, you are part of the problem.
