The disease was first reported in March, but authorities were not able to confirm the case’s source until Friday, when the New York Department of Health confirmed it had come from a man who was infected with a similar virus that caused hair loss in a baby.
The patient was discharged from the hospital and released on Monday.
Doctors in the US are warning women to be on high alert as they continue to report infections.
“Women who have been previously infected should be closely monitored for signs of infection, and those with confirmed cases should seek medical care immediately,” the CDC said in a statement.
“The virus has not yet been identified, but it is known to spread among humans through direct contact with infected individuals,” it added.
“If anyone in your household is experiencing a rash, fever or sore throat, stop doing what you are doing and seek medical attention.”
There are currently no specific symptoms or infections, but people who have recently experienced the virus can be contagious.
“We believe that if you have previously had symptoms or are currently infected with this virus, your body may be able to break down the virus and release it,” the agency said.
New York State has more than 2,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, which have been reported since March 8.
There are currently about 4,300 confirmed cases in the state.
